FLAC: Springsteen live in East Troy 1984 - 3CD - July 12 - 2 source mix

Date: 1984-07-12
Venue: Alpine Valley
Location: East Troy WI
Title: Alpine Valley Night Patched w At Alpine Valley

Recorder 1: At Alpine Valley (Part One and Part Two) (Cry Baby Records - Vinyl) Uploaded by hrubesh in 2017.

Recorder 2: Alpine Valley Night (Silver Rip of Crystal Cat CD's) uploaded somewhere bobsmo in 2007.

This main source is of course Alpine Valley Night. Two patches were required.

Patch One: Born in the U.S.A-13 seconds from Recorder 1.

Patch Two: Used Cars-1:02 from Recorder 1.

I removed the fades at the end of the discs and made it run as one whole set. I removed the "bonus" tracks. God I hate them. I did EQ the patches to match the compression put on by CC. Otherwise the switch was even more jarring. Hopefully the DS archives will yield a better quality tape that Mjk5510 will patch to the incredible Alpine Valley Night which has to be a Rick B master. Right?

Total time: 02:50:29

Set features the world premiere and one of only three outings for "Man At The Top". Bruce sings a (very) short version of "Sad Eyes" during the middle of "Backstreets"
(what a teaser). A rare "No Surrender" that does not include the harmonica solo after the second chorus, but has Bruce singing the Sha-la-la verse
(acoustic version #1). "Pink Cadillac" is performed in a rearranged version of the single with a lengthy intro about The Garden of Eden. Clarence is introduced as
“The eighth wonder” during "Sherry Darling". Also the start of "Cadillac Ranch" is extended as Bruce's guitar fails to work. "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)" includes
the "Come A Little Bit Closer" introduction. "Detroit Medley" contains an excellent "I Hear A Train". No "Travelin' Band" included in the medley yet.

Audience tapes - two recording sources available. The first can be found on the four-LP set 'At Alpine Valley Vol. 1 and 2'. A second source of excellent quality was
released on CD 'Alpine Valley Night' (Crystal Cat).

notes:
* Mixed with another show to fill missing part

Many pops/clicks removed one by one, mixed missing parts with another soundboard shows from 1980, boosted audio levels on some quiet parts and so on. You'll hear the difference.
+many other improvements I never list

"Yellow Rose Of Texas" is originally just an intro to "Cadillac Ranch", that's the reason it fades out to "Fade Away".

------

"One of only four (circulating) complete soundboard shows from the entire River tour.
This show includes several highlights from early in the tour, especially opening with Born to Run, as well as rare performances of "Jackson Cage" and "No Money Down" as an intro to "Cadillac Ranch."
Another "highlight" may be the trio of "Stolen Car," "Wreck on the Highway," and "Point Blank."" -theboots.net

This version of the show was released from a soundboard tape that circulated for many years, before the fantastic release by JEMS from the original reels. This version isn't of the same quality, but it has the vocals more up front than the JEMS version, the only issue with that unfortunately. This tape was and still is one of the better tapes from the Darkness tour, great quality. The mix is nice and up close if you prefer that to the more open mix of the whole theatre of other versions. "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" fades out early with this version, and misses the last song "Quarter To Three."

NEW: Springsteen live in New York 1978 - 1DVD - August 22

SILENT 8MM FILM
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
Live August 22, 1978
Madison Square Garden
New York City, New York

Source: Unknown Film Reels > Two 2nd Generation 8mm Film Reels

I acquired two film reels recently that were part of a gigantic Springsteen lot of memorabilia I bought. According to the seller, the collection came from a dedicated Springsteen collector who had recently passed away. I am a huge Springsteen collector myself and I was mainly interested in the reels. Anyways, a VHS of the show that was dubbed with audio was also included, and it is the same film and everything. The filmer stopped and started midsong during many of the tracks, so there are a bunch of skips. So for now I am going to just upload the audioless version. I will eventually get the audio version up. Something that should be noted is the fact that two 8mm film reels could not have possibly shot this much footage in the time; I think this collector obtained a copy of the reels from somebody who perhaps shot in 16mm.

After I took a peak at the VHS tape, I had a desire to transfer the reels but my work kept me busy for several more months. Eventually, I contacted my buddy Bill who owns a bunch of video equipment (he had owned a buisness for almost 30 years dedicated to filming events and what not) and asked him if he could transfer some film reels for me. So one day I headed to his place and we transferred the reels. Later on I edited very lightly, applying some fade in's and out's along with joining the two film reel captures. I think this is the best capture that is possible for the reels (well besides finding the lost master tapes). The reels themselves, for those who are wondering, were stored in a dustproof container for a long time.

Anyways, the film composes of most of the first set, some of the second set, and one encore. A lot of nice shots can be seen on the video, including Bruce entering the crowd during "Spirit In The Night," among others. As far as I know, this film is never before seen to the Springsteen collecting community.

(total running time 32:27)

The fact that we have over an hour of watchable video from Widener College, February 6, 1975 is nothing short of miraculous. Need I remind you that Widener represents the ONLY extant footage of E Street Band featuring Suki Lahav. It is the ONLY extant footage of "Wings for Wheels," the early version of what would become "Thunder Road." It offers a precious glimpse of Bruce and the band BEFORE Born to Run was even fully recorded. And apart from the bonus footage of Ahmanson Theatre 1973 on the Born To Run 30th Anniversary DVD, Widener is the earliest E Street Band footage of complete songs, PERIOD.

The story of how Widener was videotaped has been misreported for decades, but recently the Widener College Alumni magazine uncovered the true story. It was not shot by two students involved in a filmmaking course. It was in fact shot by Michael Turner and Jeff Audet, two huge Bruce fans who, on what can only be described as a lark, borrowed a Sony Portapak video recorder (see image link below) that belonged to Jeff's father and decided to attempt to film the show.

They cleared their biggest hurdle with an amusing white lie, according to the story in the Widener Alumni Magazine: "As Michael and his friend, Jeff, approached the entrance to Schwartz Athletic Center Field House, Turner extended his $6 concert ticket toward the student collecting them and was met with a quizzical look. 'What's that?' the student asked Turner, his gaze fixed on a large case slung over Turner's shoulder. 'I have a breathing problem and this is a portable iron lung,' Turner said without missing a beat. Either satisfied with Turner's answer, or too cold to inquire further on a freezing February night, the student took their tickets and waved them through the field house entrance."

For years, the pair would pull out the video tape to show at parties and sometime around 1986, a copy they gave to a Philadelphia DJ began to circulate widely among fans on VHS. Eventually the Widener footage would make its way to DVD, YouTube and even a snippet in the aforementioned BTR30 documentary.

But none of the circulating copies of Widener have had a known lineage back to the source. The master tape, a 1/2-inch open reel video, is, sadly, missing and presumed lost. We tried. We looked. However, this new DVD offers the next best thing as it comes from a verified first-generation VHS dubbed from the master.

With this source in hand we returned to the transfer pro who handled our last major archive video project (Passaic 9/20/78) and he did a hi-res capture in Apple ProRes. That file was then delivered via hard drive to Pete at Brucevideos who went to work painstakingly cleaning up the image. While Widener still has the same fundamental issues inherent in the filming, we think this new version is a material upgrade to all previous versions. Screenshots provided.

The new DVD also has an exciting bonus feature. We were thrilled to discover a four-song recording of Widener College February 7, 1975 among a batch of master tapes we received from The Big A. It was tape two of a two-cassette recording, the first tape of which is unfortunately lost to history (Are Widener master tapes cursed?). But what was there was the four-song encore, in effect, the missing end of the Widener video. With some recently discovered photos of the show also in hand, we thought we could blend the images and the new audio to "complete" the show. The tape also offered upgraded audio of "Sandy" which we could sync to the overlapping video footage. But the audio didn't match, and that became the first of several pieces of evidence (including new photos and the recollections of the tapers and filmers) that proved that the Widener College video we had always presumed came from the second night in fact came from the first night. The audio therefore is a new recording of a previously uncirculated show.

In order to fit the audio and the slide show on the disc and preserve the resolution of the Widener video we elected to compress the bonus audio to AC3 and present it under a blank screen with chapter breaks. Rest assured we will torrent the audio separately in uncompressed format, but we thought the pluses of having every Widener asset (video, photos and audio) on a single disc outweighed the negatives.

Notes: This is Loudpuppy's master, converted to two DVDs by me on July 29, 2005; this was when I was still making snazzy menus
and title cards. Bruce gives a great show here as a solo performer and the intensity of the performance is captured here some
pretty terrific camera work (the audio's pretty good, too) - noting that Loudpuppy was actually at the show with his mother and
was eyeballing the whole thing through his side door on the video camera! It gets better as it goes and you really feel like
you're there - nice job,Loudpuppy and nice job, Boss!

NEW: Springsteen live in New York 1988 - 3DVD - May 22

Bruce Springsteen

Night 4 of 5
May 22, 1988
CBG Classic Master Video Series Vol. 48

video: (CBG) Ricoh R-600 (same spec as Sony CCD-V5) 8mm camcorder (w/ 2X teleconverter lens) master 8mm analog tape; NTSC, 4:3 PAR, 29.97 fps; transferred to harddrive via a firewire using a Sony TRV-330 8mm digital camera w/ Time Base Correction; video capture, editing, and 2-pass VBR encoding done with Sony Vegas Pro 13 at (disc 1) 6.6K max, 6.5K avg, 1K min; (disc 2) 6.6K max, 5.4K avg, 1K min; (disc 3) 6.6K max, 5.8K avg, 1K min; authored to DVD in Sony DVD Architect Pro 6.

All video editing, audio synching and DVD authoring by Silver Stallion (guitard on Dime)

audio option #1: unknown source/lineage; LPCM 1536 bit
audio option #2: unknown source/lineage; LPCM 1536 bit

The two audio sources both sound nice (especially for a 1988 arena show). But they both were sliced up with lots of snippets taken out. If it were only cheering between songs, then it wouldn't be a big deal. However, quite often the snippet contained the first few beats of a song or Bruce's intro of the song. I was able to cover all the missing bits by either copying and pasting from the other audio source, or from the camera audio. Generally speaking, the spots where the audio has been fixed sound pretty good, but if you listen closely, you probably would notice a difference.
